6 Tips for Healthy Holiday Travel
Staying on track while you travel can be challenging. At home, you’re accustomed to routine and predictability, but on-the-go you’re more likely to pick food and drinks based on convenience than on nutrients. With unhealthy choices abound in airports and rest stops, simple carbohydrates and faux healthy bars can seem like the only options. But the good news is that a little preparation (and room in your travel bag) can help you stay on track until you reach your destination.
Here a few tips to help you eat and drink well while you travel:
Road Trip
- Bring a cooler: You don’t have to worry about TSA guidelines, so stockpile healthy beverages like green juice and kombucha to your heart’s desire. And most importantly, keep a reusable water bottle handy to make sure you stay hydrated. A good rule of thumb is two liters per person for every 100 miles.
- Pack healthy snacks: Let’s remember one person will always have a hand or two on the wheel, so handheld and mess-free snacks are key. Sprouted nuts, rice crackers, olives, sliced bell peppers or baby carrots (with hummus or non-dairy cheese!) are easy go-to’s. If you’re on a longer trip, a protein-rich, veggie packed wrap is a great choice that doesn’t require utensils.
- Make time to move: Car trips involve a lot of sitting, especially if you get stuck in traffic. Schedule mandatory get-outside breaks every hour or two and move your body for 10 minutes or so to stay energized.
Air Travel
- Get your greens: Until cold-pressed juice is an easy option at the airport, make sure to get some greens in the morning of your trip to help you hydrate. Go for a tall glass of your favorite organic cold-pressed juice, or a veggie-packed smoothie.
- Raise the bar: When it comes to healthy meals, a plated, colorful one is best. But when you’re running from Terminal A to F, a clean protein bar can be a good alternative. Some wonderfully clean, plant-based bars include Square Bar, Rise Bar and Raw Revolution. Or make your own protein balls using this recipe for No Bake Peanut Butter Chocolate Energy Bites from Juicero friend and RD Edwina Clark. Sub agave for honey to make it 100% vegan.
- BYOB: Bring your own (reusable water) bottle. Hydration is key for any type of travel. Invest in a BPA-free reusable water bottle, like S’well and make sure it’s full before your flight.
